General Purpose Classrooms

The Office of the Registrar controls 198 General Purpose Classrooms across campus. These classrooms are primarily to be used for class instruction and other academic purposes such as study or other like activity. Classrooms are divided into the following room types:

Seminar
Seminar rooms typically have an LCD Monitor, with seats and tables oriented so that students and instructors can easily interact with each other. Size: 10-24 seats.

Classroom
Classrooms typically have a multi-media audio-visual system, with seats oriented towards the front of the room, and writing surfaces for each student. Size: 15-99 seats.

Lecture Hall
Lecture Halls have a pitched floor, so that those in the rear are seated higher than those at the front, allowing them to see the lecturer. Size: 100-199 seats.

Auditorium
Auditoriums are basically large Lecture Halls and also have a pitched floor, so that those in the rear are seated higher than those at the front, allowing them to see the lecturer. Size: 200+ people.

Expectations of use:

In addition to Campus Reservations policies, all users of General Purpose classrooms must adhere to the following policies:

Room condition

All users of general purpose classrooms are expected to leave the classroom and its equipment in good order. This includes chairs, desks and tables straightened, electronic equipment powered down, all markings erased from whiteboards, removal and/or disposal of everything that accompanied users into the classroom.

Users are also expected to take extra care that no damage is done to classrooms, classroom furniture, or equipment and that the room is returned to a class-ready condition. Taping floors is not permitted. Removing furniture from any classroom (even if it is intended for use in an alternate classroom) is not permitted.

Noise prohibitions

Any activity resulting in noise levels exceeding that of a general lecture course is not permitted in General Purpose classrooms. This includes but is not limited to student group rehearsals, auditions, and meetings involving a band, music, and/or productions.

Food

Food is not permitted in any General Purpose classroom. These classrooms are not intended for banquets, catered events, dinners or parties. Failure to adhere to this policy may subject the sponsoring organization to lose their ability to use general purpose classroom space in the future.

Refer to the Dean of Students Office space use policies for additional information.

Scheduling General Purpose Classrooms

The Office of the Registrar partners with Student Center and Campus Reservations to manage scheduling of General Purpose classrooms. In order to prioritize class instruction, no reservation requests will be accepted for a given term until optimization has been completed and all sections have been assigned a general-purpose classroom. Approximately a month before the start of the term, Scheduling will coordinate with Campus Reservations to open up the General Purpose classrooms to reservation requests for non-instructional use. Events are welcomed so long as they are compatible with the academic nature of classrooms and academic buildings and they do not adversely impact the classroom, its contents, or the surrounding area.

Scheduling priority for General Purpose Classrooms

  1. Academic instruction—i.e. lectures, discussion sections, labs, seminars, etc—identifiable with a CRN in the Schedule of Classes, and related exams (before and during finals week)
  2. Review sessions, study groups, workshops, and other academic activities
  3. School departments and University administration events
  4. Student group special events, including guest lectures, fundraisers and recruitment meetings
  5. Student group weekly meetings
  6. External Events

Please note that all events in General Purpose classrooms other than academic instruction and exams will be scheduled by Campus Reservations. The Office of the Registrar reserves the right to adjust or deny any events that conflict with academic instruction and/or related exams.

Reservations during final exam week

To ensure classroom availability for review sessions and exams and to maintain an environment conducive to studying/testing, events may not be scheduled during final exam week.

Optimization

General purpose classrooms are assigned to sections for academic instruction by Scheduling through optimization. Optimization is an automated EMS (Event Management System) process in which sections are prioritized and assigned General Purpose classrooms. Prior to optimization, classrooms and building preferences for departments, subjects, instructors, and specific courses can be submitted to Scheduling by the Departmental Scheduling Coordinators only. Please contact your department if you are unsure who serves as the Scheduling Coordinator.

Room change requests

After optimization is completed and the schedule is published, room change requests can be submitted to Scheduling for consideration by Departmental Scheduling Coordinators only. Please contact your department if you are unsure who serves as the Scheduling Coordinator. Requests will be processed in the order in which they are received. Scheduling cannot guarantee that all requests will be accommodated and reserves the right to deny requests based on factors such as classroom availability and adherence to the matrix.
